Guitar Hero: World Tour

Posted by: bam on: February 27, 2009

Of all the “band” oriented games, this one has the WORST set list. The only saving grace of this getup is the TooL set list which even then is questionable. I’ll also admit that after playing the RB and GH franchise based games, I much prefer the key style animations to RB over GH.

RB also has a much smoother transition between medium and hard while GH:WT seems to have bumped up the hard in comparison to the other GH games. Smooth transition there is not.

Basically, don’t go out of your way to purchase GH:WT. There are much better games out there.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Posted by: bam on: October 12, 2008

I’ll start out with a small disclaimer.  One of my favorite party games of all time would have to be Super Smash Bros. Melee.  The controls were smooth and the special moves were easy to pick up. The character selection was great due to the fact that there weren’t an overwhelming amount of characters to choose from.

Now, back to SSBB.  If you have a large television this could be a fun “party game”, but the amount of fun to be had with a game shouldn’t rely on the size of the television.  Having said that the controls are rather clumsy and a good word to describe the game play is “chaotic”.   Here are just a few things you’ll hear while playing this game:  “Where the hell am I?!” “How the hell did I do that?” “Wha.. what just happened??”

The character selection is overwhelming to the point where I just want to randomize it out instead of sitting there for 5 minutes trying to figure out who could potentially have the best moves.  But that really doesn’t matter because I can’t figure out their damn moves anyhow.

I will say that if you have ‘em, use your GameCube controllers.

Rock Band 2

While some people say the set list isn’t all that great, I tend to enjoy it.  For a mere $5 you can also transfer your RB1 songs over, and you can use them on your tours.  The downloadable content leaves something to be desired, but it’s still early in the game.  I look forward to more 80’s hair band tunes.

As I don’t have the new instruments and only the game I can’t really comment on the quality of the equipment.  However, I will mention that my RB1 mic crapped out and I had to buy another.  Bummer.  My guitar of choice, the Xplorer, is also compatible with RB2.

I’d say pick up the game if you really want a different variety of music.

E3 News

Since I’m lazy and somewhat busy lately I’ll just let everyone know that a great place for E3 updates right now is screwattack.com. They’re doing everything from live coverage to recaps.  Also, the AVGN has joined up with the crew at Game Trailers this year.

So, how about that MK vs DC?

Guitar Hero: On Tour

Posted by: bam on: July 1, 2008

A portable version of Guitar Hero.  While it’s $50, I’d have to say that it’s an o.k. investment as far as playability and gaming goes.  You’re limited to the amount of songs you can play at 25.  Once you beat them, much like every other GH game out there, you just progress to the next difficulty level.  There are no boss battles [yay!], but there is a versus mode that I have yet to try out.

With the attachment piece (they keys that mount onto your DS) they leave room to create different cartridges with more songs.  After 3 days of playing my game, though, the strap broke (frayed off).  This is rather unfortunate until they decide to sell straps individually.  For now it’s sewn on rather sloppily.

Fun, but definitely room for improvement.

FireFox NES Emulator

This is pretty amazing. It’s Java based and the game selection is available via a sidebar.  The best part is that it’s free.

Enjoy.

Contra 4

Posted by: bam on: June 8, 2008

So, if you go into used game stores you’ll usually find the old Contra games. Unfortunately they’re overpriced because they’re “rare”. Whatever.

I fixed this problem. I walked into Game Stop and purchased Contra 4 for $20. It’s like a blast from the past but with better graphics and portability. You play the game in Arcade Mode and once you beat it, you’ll be introduced to .. Challenge Mode (DUN DUN DUNNNNN). I have no idea what this entails as I haven’t beat the game yet.

The game is pretty cool as it’s marketed as a direct sequel to the Contra games on the original Nintendo consoles. A nice feature when I turned my system back on was the option to “Resume Game”. Whoa, auto save?! Amazing. You can even choose your character and turn off certain things like annoying voice effects. While it’s comical to hear a Duke Nukem-esque voice in a Contra game, it is not fun to hear “COME GET SOME” every time you die.

You don’t really utilize the touch screen an awful lot but eh, it’s a Contra game. A classic side-scroller indeed!

“For the Horde!”

It’s an addiction.  A horrible, terrible addiction.  But, I must say that WoW is probably the best PC game I’ve played to date. The community you interact with is highly dependent upon any guild you join and the server you choose to play on.

Even if you don’t have a lot of spare time I would recommend playing.  Between 3 jobs and a fairly active social life my spouse and I can manage to put in a few hours a week.  There is a monthly fee, but if you go the auto-deduct route it’s a mere $14.95 a month.

God I’m a nerd.

Tonight, is the night.

I will finally be playing Super Smash Bros. Brawl tonight. I know, I’m a terrible nintendo “fanboy”. Playing what is likely the best Wii release yet – a month after it’s release. For shame!

Things that make you go “hmm”

Posted by: bam on: March 13, 2008

Finally, at redoctane.com you can get the Les Paul wireless controller for guitar hero 3.  This is great!  Except it isn’t offered for the 360 [yet].  What?!  Why? WHY?

You can now purchase the drums separately for Rock Band.  They only cost *drum roll* $80.  Seriously.  $80 for the drums and $60 for the game.  Are people really that tight for cash that they’re not willing to spend the extra $20 for the entire game?  Hell, if you even need to buy the drums separately for some reason [ie you've been pounding like a caveman on your current ones] then you’ll likely be replacing them for years or should probably take it easy.

I know some of this is old news but I just wanted to express my disgust.
